In 2025, the US State Department issued an unmistakable mandate: the American pavilion at the Venice Biennale would present work free of political critique, dissent, or discomfort - instead focused strictly on "American values" and "American exceptionalism." Any work deemed to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion would be disqualified. The result, Call Me the Breeze, is a palatably aesthetic, studiously neutral offering at a moment when American policy is producing some of the most consequential and contested conditions in living memory.

And so, Call Me the Storm was conceived. This ongoing series showcases North Carolina artists whose practices, whether implicitly or explicitly, address the world as it actually is. At a time when institutions are being directed to suppress work that calls attention to uncomfortable histories and present-day realities, these artists ask: uncomfortable to whom, and why? This series of online exhibitions creates space for work that is bound together by the common pursuit of personal and societal truth.
